They fucking grew up with the four as legend, and should've justified the importance of each one. It doesn't make sense for the kingdom to originally think the legendary shield hero is useless. He could have avoided this situation both by treating the other heroes as enemies and being on guard around them and by freeing his waifu after he could assure her reliability.
